Photoage. Very brief history of photography for last hundred years.
Vladimir Levashov
Nizhni Novgorod, Nizhni Novgorod, the National Centre for contemporary Arts, 2002, edition of 500 copies. Design: Vladimir Levashov and studio " Dirigible".
"Photoage" presents a brief account on the history of photography in 20th century. It consists of 10 essays. Each of it is dedicated to the certain decade. There is an attempt in every essay to describe the specific place of photography, its relations with society and its influence on it. It also reflects on major photographic themes of the given decade and on changing object of photography. The birth and the initial formation of the medium in the 19th century is not included in the book. "Photoage" rather focuses on development of the medium since its active role in society was already established. It also follows the advances of phototechnology. A changing nature of phototechnology leads photography to the crucial passage from the documental fixation of visual reality to the informative and artistic self-sufficiency and, lately, to the radical transformation of the medium's essence at the era of multimedia.
The author, Vladimir Levashov is an established art-critic and the curator of photo and contemporary art exhibitions. He leaves and works in Moscow.
